This temple is located in west Bali. It is a coastal temple perched on a cliff. The temple was built in the 16th century by a Hindu priest from Java named Dang Hyang Nirartha. The name of the temple was come from a symbolic gift of Danghyang Nirartha's hair as a gesture of esteem for the devout villagers.
Near the temple gate, just right on the main road, the trucks, and public vehicle usually stop to sek a blessing from the priest. At the end of road to the main temple is the garden with a parking area, toilet, pavilion, and food stalls selling fresh local fruit. Here you can view the panorama of rice fields from the pavilion. At the carved gateway travelers are blessed, asked for a donation. (To proceed you must dress appropriately and wear the sash).
This temple is special because of the lovely natural views surrounding the temple. It is a beautiful cliff top sea temple shaded by frangipani and cempaka trees. The main temple is Pura Penataran, believed to be the site where Danghyang Nirartha first prayed. Under the overhanging rock facing the ocean is the sacred five-chambered cave Goa Harimau dedicated to Dewi Melanting, the goddess of prosperity.
To get here from Denpasar is pretty much straight drive west, as the temple is located near the Gilimanuk-Denpasar highway. You can either use a rental car, or public transportation from Ubung (Denpasar) terminal.
