Sanur Beach

The town of Sanur streches for about 5 km along the east coastline of Bali. The town follows the coastline and provides access to the long calm beach in a number of places. The waters here are much calmer than the west side and southern beaches and are popular for families and those more interested in swimming than surfing. A scenic paved walkway runs the length of the beach, past numerous markets, restaurants and the grounds of top-end hotels.

Sanur, during the thirties, was THE place to be. The original cool crowd made Sanur their home -- and some still do. The older bungalows here are large, stylish and still likely to house blue bloods, diplomats and the more conservatives types on the island.

The government regulation that forbids buildings taller than a coconut palm has allowed Sanur to retain much of its village character. The regulation encouraged the growth of bungalow-style hotels based on the Balinese norm of many small buildings within the one-house compound.

Spend your day around Sanur, lazing by the pool-side, walking on the beach, or just following the paths. During the week end, many local people visit the beach, some of them are exercising (jogging, biking, or kayaking), others take a more relaxed approach and just lay around on the sands enjoying the beach scene.
