Kuta

Located in the southern Bali, Kuta was originally a fishing village which began to branch out into a surfer mecca in the late 1960s.

Initially accommodations were mostly available in Denpasar, and visitor made the day trip to Kuta, but by the early 1970s the accommodations began to catch up. Surfers began to not only enjoy the waves at Kuta but also to use it as base to explore the rest of Bali's extensive coastline. Kuta is now known internationally for its long sandy beach, beach resorts, varied accommodations, and many bars or restaurants. It is the center of an extensive tourist-oriented urban area which has now merged with the north side neighboring town, Legian. Because of its proximity to the airport, most visitors will sooner or later find themselves visiting Kuta.

Kuta beach is popular beach for surfing but less suitable for swimming, although the coast guard are on duty during the day time. Topless bathing is tolerated here, though you should be sensitive to local sensibilities and exercise some discretion. Many touts work the beach; most all are very easy to deal with and not pushy. Be wary of locals offering to sell drugs on this beach some are cops!
