Siwa Ratri literally means "The Siva Night", on which the Balinese ask for forgiveness to God. It is also a redemption night to contemplate all the sins of the Balinese.
Siwa Ratri is celebrated during the new moon of 7th month of Balinese Calendar. There is a series of ritual observances throughout the day, typically as follows.
The Siwa Ratri will begin with a morning prayer, typically ending at 6:00.
The ritual will continue with three fasting activities.
- Monabrata: not talking for 12 hours.
- Upawasa: not eating and drinking for 24 hours.
- Mejagra: not sleeping for 36 hours.
The Siwa Ratri celebration also aims to overcome materialism and to be closer to God through surrender and prayer.
