Tenganan Village

Tenganan Village is one of Bali's original traditional villages. Located in the Karangasem mountain area, this unique village has been protected from the outside word for centuries by its walls. Tenganan has maintained a unique and ancient pre-Hindu culture and is well worth the visit.

Tenganan is a "Bali Aga" village, a communal society dedicated to preserving cultural heritage. The village is laid out in three parts to suit different functions: dwelling, gardening and rice farming. The houses are all of the same design and are backed off by one central living and trading path. Tenganan is famous for the "Double Ikat" weaving style, known as gringsing, which is said to offer the wearer magical powers. The village also has a rather spectacular (albeit peculiar) artistic tradition: the Pandanus leaf duel (Geret Padan) in which men fight each other with spiky leaves of the Pandamus to the accompaniment of the entrancing sounds of the iron gamelan. It's odd and no doubt a bit painful...

Each month a festival is held to honors gods and ancestors. Tourists are welcome, but must dress respectfully, and observe local codes of conduct.

The village is easily accessed from nearby Candidasa. It`s not difficult to get to Tenganan - it`s about 6km to the west of Candidasa.
