Lake Batur is the largest of the lakes in the interior of the island. it is a caldera lake, located inside Mount Batur, one of Bali's active volcanos. The mountain and the lake are located in the regency of Bangli in the Kintamani district.

Lake Batur is quite large and stretches nearly 7 kilometers in length and 2.5 kilometers in width. The views can be fantastic, especially at dawn as the sun rises over the lip of Mount Batur. The Mount Batur is in fact an active volcano, there are hot spring nearby that frequently cause clouds around the tips of the cone. From the main road there is a road lead to the lake, and a village called Kedisan in which there are some small resorts.

Visit this area during dry season as the fog ever-present and thick at the rainy season. Tours allow you to go up Mount Batur to witness the sunrise.

There can be a lot of touts at the footpath you first see when you enter the area -- a common observation point for new arrivals. It can be a real gauntlet at times, but the views are pretty great.
